Things Worth Noting in the Rankings:
Brandon (Slightly) Stumbles
After going 0-2 to start the season (both out of and in-state), Brandon does indeed fall back from where they ended last season. The catch? It’s only one spot. Brandon’s reputation seems to hold them relatively in place for now, as they still have plenty of schedule and competition to start backing up their rank once more. Their first competition up from here? Matching up against West Jones once again at the Northeast Jones Classic, where Brandon will look to get revenge after West Jones’ shocking upset from the weekend prior.
New 1A/Small Division Crowning
The other major shock from the South Jones came in the 1A division, where Oxford not only lost to West Marion (thereby snapping their 11-competition win streak in the division), but they came in dead last at the competition. The result? Oxford falls back two spots from the end of 2024, leaving West Marion in the number one spot. While there won’t be any matchups between the top three this upcoming weekend, there is a high likelihood that such a bout will occur in the weekends following.
New Alabama Blood Atop 2A/Middle Mixed
Last season, we saw Vestavia Hills just barely edge out Northeast Jones for the number-one spot in this division. Starting off this season, however, Homewood Continuum has taken the number one spot by storm, coming off an extremely impressive showing at the Albertville Diamond Classic. It was there where they topped the third- and fourth-ranked groups from the tier (Hoover and Tift County, respectively). It’ll be a quick sleep for Homewood though, as they turn around this weekend to fight off Vestavia Hills, Pearl River Central, and Helena at Oak Mountain’s King of the Mountain Invitational.
Tift County Coming In Hot
If anyone seems to be an early front-runner for not just most improved group, but also most improved program, Tift County looks to be an early sho0-in. With both Single-Gender groups ranked and their 2A/Middle Division group on the podium as well, it seems the folks down at Tift have finally started to catch their stride.
Future Matchups
While it’s still early in the season, that means there is plenty of time for these results to change. If there’s anything that being around show choir all these years has taught this author, it’s that the previous statement is guaranteed to happen eventually. The most likely catalyst? The Oak Mountain King Of The Mountain Invitational. Four of the top 10 ranked 4A/3A and X-Large/Large division groups will be facing off to assert their place among the top, so grab your popcorn. It’s guaranteed to be quite the show in Birmingham this weekend.
These rankings will be updated every week following a total collection and reflection of the results. Come back after this weekend to see any new potential placements!
