Things Worth Noting in the Rankings:
Middle-Mixed Riser, Single-Gender Swap
After another objectively successful weekend for the Tift County High School show choir program overall, their results are reflected in this week’s new set of rankings. Their middle-mixed group, Eighth Street Singing Company, rises two spots in their division to sit under Homewood Continuum and above Hoover Paradigm to claim their place as the second-best Middle Mixed group. With their mens group also beating their womens group this last weekend, they have essentially switched places in the divisional rankings, with Tiftosterone rising from 10th to 6th and Ladies Choice dropping down from 6th to 8th.
New Small-Mixed Finalist
While there was no change among the top three small mixed groups, there was some shuffling behind them. Taking claim to the fourth spot was Lakeside Soundsation after beating Sylacauga this last weekend to win their division at Auburn. Their only loss in the division during this season was at Albertville, where they won Best Visuals but tied in show design with and lost vocals to Chelsea.
Divisional Discrepancies Again (CCA and Briarwood)
This week, eligibility guidelines shifted, with choirs now considered in the highest division they have competed in this season. That means that Clinton Christian was reclassified from small mixed to medium mixed. With this being said, CCA did not make the top five in 2A/Middle Mixed and Briarwood dropped out of the top ten of X-Large/Large or 4A/3A. They will continue to be ranked in these categories for the rest of the season in order to keep the rankings and tiers aligned.
Future Matchups
As always, this next weekend in the South offers quite a few intriguing matchups to keep an eye on. The most-anticipated event this weekend looks to be the Madison Central Deep South Classic, where there will be a Grenada versus Oak Mountain versus Brandon versus Northwest Rankin match. This is a 3rd versus 4th versus 5th versus 10th placement matchup from the 4A/3A and X-Large/Large division rankings. This goes without saying that three of those four programs have Single-Gender groups (who are all ranked) also competing at Deep South. Down at Oak Grove, there is a West Jones versus Biloxi rematch to headline the event, while Northeast Jones and West Marion look to continue their stand as the best in-state groups of their division. There are also a handful of competitions this weekend out-of-state where the country will get to see how some of the Southern groups measure against different regional competition. Some of these traveling Southern groups include, but are not limited to, Jackson Academy Encore, Jackson Prep Reveillon, Homewood Nexus, and Briarwood Radica.
These rankings will be updated every week during competition season.
