Southern Show Choir Is Making Mississippi Moves

By Tony Holeman, Southern contributor

Another weekend of the 2025 southern show choir season is over and another set of results is in! As the end of the season draws nearer, each set of results has more ramifications for the months ahead.

The competition of the week in the South ended as most expected (a Clinton sweep followed by Petal and Tupelo), but it wasn’t without a few eyebrow raising notes from earlier in the day. For starters: Clinton lost both the choreography and show design caption in prelims (to Petal and Tupelo, respectively), making that three total captions that Clinton has lost in the preliminary rounds this season. To be fair, they always ended up winning these back in Finals, but it is interesting enough to make note of nonetheless. Other divisional placements with the undercard groups ended in status quo, with South Jones repeating their victory over Northeast Jones and West Marion reestablishing themselves with a revenge win over Pass Christian. Final results are as below (five finalists):

GC) Clinton “Attachè” (Sweep)

1RU) Petal “Soundsations”

2RU) Tupelo “Synergy”

3RU) Petal “Innovations”

4RU) Madison Central “Reveille”

1st in 4A) Clinton “Attachè

1st in 2A) South Jones “Company”

1st in 1A) West Marion “New Era”

1st in Single Gender) Tupelo “Synergy”

TIFT COUNTY PEACH STATE INVITATIONAL

(Rome City Schools)

The other Southern show choir competition this weekend led to the first Grand Championship for Rome in three years, beating the likes of Opelika and Tarpon Springs (who took the choreography caption for the division) in order to do so. Oxford won the Small Division category, followed by Appling County (who took the Best Choreography for the division) and Lakeside. This competition was rounded out by Opelika winning the Single-Gender division over both Tallassee groups. Final results are as below (no finals):

GC) Rome “Grand Finale” (BV)

1st in Middle) Rome “Grand Finale”

1st in Small) Oxford “Sound”

1st in Single Gender) Opelika “Impressions"

The South traveled to the Mt. Zion Midwest Invitational this last weekend and made quite the statement. Starting with the undercard, Spain Park swept Troy Buchanan’s prep group in their division. In the Single-Gender category, Brandon Bellas group finished the day at third overall in their division behind Loveland's and Wheaton Warrenville South’s womens groups. As for the final results, Grenada walked away with the title of Grand Champion (along with Best Choreography). Brandon Brio finished finals in third. A few other noteworthy remarks include Brandon tying Wheaton Warrenville South in raw points in finals and Grenada also tying Wheaton Warrenville South in raw points for the finals Best Vocals caption. Congratulations to all the Southern groups for representing the region so well!
