Prep, Tallassee Headline Southern Opening Weekend

Welcome back to the world of southern show choir! It is good to be back after such a long offseason! This week’s array of events features the Jackson Prep Show Choir Masters and Tallassee Capital City Classic.

Jackson Prep Show Choir Masters

Simply put, the first couple of weeks for show choir are always a bit of a shot in the dark when talking about previews and predictions. You have some kind of an idea as to what to expect from certain groups, but you also understand that everything can flip on a dime and that the previously-made ranking system you had in your head can turn to shambles. With that being said, I’ll be using last season’s final southern ranking as the metric for where I place the groups in the predictions here. It’s worth noting though that there are only seven total high school groups (three groups in 3A and two groups in 1A) competing at this competition, with three of them coming from Northwest Rankin. This will be resulting in fewer finalists for the night. We also can’t ignore that with the decreased number of finals spots, both Morton and Clinton Christian Academy will be trying to stake an upset somewhere and take their chance to sneak into finals.

Predictions (four finalists):

GC) Northwest Rankin “The Ambassadors” (BV)

1RU) Jackson Academy “Encore” (BC/Show Design)

2RU) Northwest Rankin “The Allure”

3RU) Spain Park “Rhapsody in Blue”

1st in 3A) Northwest Rankin “The Ambassadors”

1st in 1A) Clinton Christian Academy “Extreme”

1st in Single Gender) Northwest Rankin “The Allure”

Tallassee Capital City Classic

Home to one of the biggest upsets of the 2024 show choir season, Tallassee is back to help kick off the season. While it may not be as top-heavy as it was last year (only one top-division group as a matter of fact), this competition is full of fights throughout the rest of the divisions. In a finals-less competition, it looks to be a cakewalk for Auburn, but the rest of the placements are completely up for grabs. It’s also worth noting that Pike Road will be debuting a new girls group, Panache.

Predictions (no finals):

GC) Auburn “Varsity Singers” (BV/BC/Show Design)

1RU) Vestavia Hills “Singers”

2RU) Hoover “Paradigm”

3RU) Auburn “Elan”

4RU) Tift County “Eighth Street Singing Company”

1st in Tier I) Auburn “Varsity Singers”

1st in Tier II) Vestavia Hills “Singers”

1st in Tier III) Appling County “Applause”

1st in Tier IV) Lakeside “Soundsation”

1st in Treble) Auburn “Elan”

1st in Bass) Auburn “Men at Work”

Come right back here after the weekend is over for a dissection of all the results, whether they be chalk or upsets. Good luck to all the groups!
