Ohio Rankings (2/21/25)

By Michael McHargh, Ohio contributor

This past weekend was the busiest weekend yet for Ohio and the official halfway point of the Ohio season. A stacked Olentangy line-up, three smaller in-state matchups and an out-of-state competition all contributed to groups' resumes. Ensembles are at various points in their seasons, meaning that groups continue to rise, fall and swap places in the rankings with every single performance.

News and Notes

  • Solon and Marysville continue their lead at the top of the rankings, as they are dominating the state of Ohio. Although both groups have taken Best Vocals, Best Choreography and overall Grand Champion at each of their competitions thus far, these groups go will not go head-to-head this season to settle the score. Grove City rounds out the podium after another extremely successful weekend at Olentangy.

  • Loveland earns the unofficial title of “riser of the week”, jumping up five spots in the rankings after their comeback finals performance at Olentangy. This brings them just behind Fairfield, who had a solid showing at Medina. Trailing behind these two groups are Olentangy, who continues to rise as the season goes on with their eyes set on Show Choir Nationals, and Piqua, who had a lighter weekend at Hamilton competing against a handful of Small Mixed groups.

  • Closing out the top ten are ETC, Beavercreek, and Findlay. ETC will look to regain some momentum after their tough loss at Loveland. Although their season isn’t over, they will not match up with another Ohio group for the rest of the season. Beavercreek maintains their spot, jumping Findlay, who had a less-than-ideal season debut at Olentangy.

 Small Mixed

  1. Edgewood “Choraliers” (2 first-place votes, no change)

  2. Ross “Legacy” (1 first-place vote, +1)

  3. Twinsburg “Great Expectations” (-1)

  4. Euclid “Varsity Chorale” (NC)

  5. North Royalton “Royal Harmony” (1 first-place vote, +2)

  6. Kenton “Top Twenty” (-1)

  7. Mayfield “Limited Edition” (-1)

  8. Garfield Heights “Music Express” (NC)

  9. Buckeye Valley “Visions” (NC)

  10. Ada “Varsity Singers” (NC)

Receiving Votes: Lebanon "Singers", Medina "Encore Entertainment Company", Teays Valley "Prominent Rendition"

News and Notes

  • Ross jumps to second over Twinsburg after a great showing at Ben Davis (Indianapolis), where they placed second in a very dense field of Small Mixed choirs. Although neither group will see each other again this season, each will run their own unique tour to finish off the season and have the opportunity to shake things up.

  • Leading the middle of the pack is fan favorite Euclid, who is looking to claim their third consecutive Grand Champion at Alliance this weekend against some tough competition.

  • After some wavering in the past few rankings, North Royalton came back strong and lands in the middle of the heap after their triumphant win over a small but mighty field at Kenton this past weekend. This boosts them back into the top five and ahead of Kenton and Mayfield.

  • Although neither of the bottom few groups rose in the rankings, they still maintained their lead ahead of the rest of the Small Mixed division.

Single-Gender

  1. Grove City “Class Act” (2 first-place votes, +3)

  2. Fairfield “Pure Elegance” (1 first-place vote, NC)

  3. ETC “Rouge” (1 first-place vote, NC)

  4. Loveland “Allure” (+1)

  5. Marysville “Swingers Select” (-4)

News and Notes

  • Everything changed. Grove City took the top spot on the strength of a win over Loveland Allure at Olentangy, while Marysville took a tumble after placing third at that same event.

Looking Ahead

This weekend brings another five competitions for Ohio choirs and is sure to cause even more change and shifting in the rankings. All three major cities in Ohio are hosting in some way this weekend.

Near Akron, Alliance will host a plethora of Small Mixed groups, among them Buckeye Valley, Euclid, Garfield Heights, Kenton, and Pennsylvania's Scranton First Edition. Four of the competition's past Grand Champions will be in attendance, with a total of 12 groups competing for top honors.

Near Columbus, two more choirs debut for the year as Perrysburg and Central Crossing compe for the first time this year at Grove City. The headlining match-up at this competition is Findlay vs. Piqua vs. Hurricane, but a handful of other groups hope to make some noise and break into finals here. This is the first of two face-offs for Findlay and Piqua as they will also see each other at Solon next week.

Near Cincinnati, Ross hosts their Championship event featuring Fairfield, Loveland, Marysville, Norwood, and a handful of out-of-state competitors. This face-off two of three for Loveland and Marysville this year, with Marysville currently leading 2-0. They will see each other one last time at Fairfield to close out the season. Loveland will also see Fairfield again next weekend at South Dearborn in Indiana.

Lastly, Medina, Solon, and Twinsburg travel to neighboring states this weekend. Medina and Twinsburg continue their seasons at Robert C. Byrd in West Virginia, finally competing against each other after hosting each other the last two weekends. Solon will travel to Homestead in Indiana to close out their 2025 season, hoping to have their first undefeated season season since 2012. They will face a pretty tough division, competing against the likes of Brownsburg, Carroll, and Noblesville.
