Marysville, ETC and Twinsburg Top Ohio Preseason Rankings

By Michael McHargh, Ohio contributor

As part of its mission to connect locally with show choir audiences across the country, HomeRoom Show Choir will have weekly Ohio rankings this year. The first batch is here - just in time for many of these choirs to hit the stage at Beavercreek.

A group of four regional experts were surveyed. The results, plus some news and notes, are included below.

Large Mixed

  1. Marysville “Swingers Unlimited” (3 first-place votes)

  2. ETC “The All Americans” (1 first-place vote)

  3. Solon “Music in Motion”

  4. Findlay “First Edition”

  5. Grove City “Touch of Class”

  6. Loveland “By Request”

  7. Piqua “The Company”

  8. Fairfield “Choraliers”

  9. Beavercreek “Friends”

  10. Olentangy “Keynotes”

Receiving Votes: Marion Harding "Harding Singers"

The top three groups had stellar seasons in 2024 and made waves in and outside of Ohio. Marysville has remained on the top of the heap of all groups in Ohio after the pandemic, having only fallen to Findlay and Ross in the 2023 season. While ETC had a slower start after the pandemic, they continue to rise each season and came back in a major way in 2024 with an undefeated season, claiming seven out of eight vocals and choreography captions. Ranked third is Solon, who had a similar trajectory and had one of their best seasons to date in 2024. Their record featured three wins and two other podium placements ahead of Findlay, Grove City and Piqua.

With the competition schedules that have been confirmed already, here are a handful of competitions where Large Mixed showdowns are sure to excite:

Beavercreek - Grove City vs. Loveland vs. Olentangy vs. Solon vs. Piqua

Marion Harding - ETC vs. Marysville

Loveland - Beavercreek vs. ETC vs. Fairfield

Olentangy - Findlay vs. Grove City vs. Loveland vs. Marysville

Small Mixed

  1. Twinsburg “Great Expectations” (1 first-place vote)

  2. Edgewood “Choraliers” (3 first-place votes)

  3. Buckeye Valley “Visions”

  4. Medina “Encore Entertainment Company”

  5. North Royalton “Royal Harmony”

  6. Ross “Legacy”

  7. Kenton “Top Twenty”

  8. Mayfield "Limited Edition:

  9. Alliance “Jet Setters”

  10. Hamilton “Prestige”

Receiving Votes: Lebanon "Singers", Garfield Heights "Music Express", Sheridan "Northern Stars", Teays Valley "Prominent Rendition", Euclid "Varsity Chorale", Benjamin Logan "Standing Ovation"

Leading the pack in Small Mixed are Twinsburg, Edgewood, and Buckeye Valley. While Edgewood boasts arguably the best record on paper in the Small Mixed division, all three of the top choirs had great seasons defeating groups in and outside of Ohio. Twinsburg ran up against many Large Mixed groups in 2024, holding their own against the likes of Garfield Heights, Medina, Lebanon and many other Small Mixed groups. While Edgewood mostly competed against out-of-state schools this season, their sweep of the Small Mixed division at Fairfield last season proves that they are on top as well. Lastly is Buckeye Valley, who had a slow start but fantastic end to the season, excelling over the likes of North Royalton, Kenton and many other Small Mixed stalwarts.

Single-Gender

  1. ETC “Rouge” (4 first-place votes)

  2. Fairfield “Pure Elegance”

  3. Grove City “Class Act”

  4. Loveland “Allure”

  5. Marysville “Swingers Select”

    Receiving Votes: Olentangy "She-Notes"

The crown for the single-gender division remains with ETC for the third season in a row, as they have been undefeated within the state of Ohio since 2022. Trailing just behind them is Fairfield and Grove City. All three groups have been on the rise, even beating out mixed groups from Beavercreek, Twinsburg, and Solon during finals in recent years.
