Linn-Mar Supernova Featured Iowa's Brightest Stars

By Quinn Masek, Siouxland Contributor

After the 2024 Supernova was canceled due to weather, the 2025 event came back

swinging better than ever. It was so successful that Linn-Mar sold 700 more tickets than

they expected. Let’s recap the event that brought in some of the biggest powerhouses

in Iowa.

Womens Division

Grand Champion: Johnston “Bella Voce”

1st Runner Up: Iowa City “Charisma”

2nd Runner Up: Cedar Rapids Jefferson “Ovation”

It's really a shock to see Johnston’s womens group steal the spotlight in this division. Bella

Voce has been known as one of the best womens groups in Iowa. Still, a shoutout goes to

Charisma and Ovation for giving it their all with impressive performances.

Prep Division

Grand Champion: Johnston “Synergy” (BV/BC/BB)

1st Runner Up: Waukee Northwest “Aurora”

2nd Runner Up: Cedar Rapids Washington “Celebration”

3rd Runner Up: Prairie “Focal Point”

4th Runner Up: Cedar Rapids Kennedy “Protege”

Johnston Synergy has won every prep division they’ve competed at since 2019, and

that momentum didn’t slow down here. They also took most of the caption awards in the

prep/womens division, and Luke Fongkhamdeng received a best soloist award for his

performance in the groups opener.

The other prep groups weren’t anything to overlook. Aurora performed for the first time

this season and gave Synergy a run for their money, Celebration did well for themselves

after placing second in the division last week, and Focal Point’s Zoe Wolrab took the

other best soloist award in the division.

Finals

Grand Champion: Waukee Northwest “Eos” (BV/BC)

1st Runner Up: Johnston “Innovation”

2nd Runner Up: Cedar Rapids Kennedy “Happiness Inc.”

3rd Runner Up: Iowa City “4th Ave Jazz Company” (BB)

4th Runner Up: Prairie “The Ambassadors”

5th Runner Up: Johnston “Synergy”

Synergy did so well in the prep division that they managed to squeeze into finals, an

impressive accomplishment for the group. The Ambassadors received Grand Champion

at Muscatine last weekend, but placed fifth this weekend at a more difficult competition.

Their Sawyer Speltz still snagged a best soloist award. The Ambassadors also beat 4th Ave

Jazz Company last weekend, but this time Iowa City buckled up their bootstraps and

placed ahead of The Ambassadorsand also took the Best Band award. Happiness

Inc. had a really heartfelt show about fatherhood that had some serious emotional

moments but it wrapped up with a sweet message.

When Innovation was announced 2nd in finals, the gymnasium was admittedly confused.

Innovation had a seriously entertaining show based on the play Prometheus Unbound.

There were some microphone issues with the girls song, but there were enough changes

made between prelims and finals that still made this performance phenomenal. Soloist Jay

Rixner also received a best soloist award for his outstanding performance in the closer.

And yet, Waukee Northwest came out on top with both vocals and choreography. Maybe

a controversial decision by the judges, but after seeing them compete in Sioux Falls last

weekend, this was by far an improved version of Eos’ show. Their tech worked, their vocals

were powerful, their choreography was innovative, and their show grabbed the

audience's attention. It all added up to impressive win for the Des Moines group. Eos takes

on 10th Street Edition this upcoming weekend weekend at Johnston’s Showzam.
