This past week, there were not one but two competitions in the region. North Texas show choir invitational happened on Thursday, February 20 with shocking results. Fossil Ridge Pantheon won its first-ever Grand Championship. Fossil Ridge won Best Vocals and Best Choreography en route to the win. Pantheon has had a breakout season, placing third at Cowtown Classic and now first at North Texas. Their last competition is this weekend at Keller Central Lone Star.
Coming in behind Pantheon was Vivacé from Coppell High, a second-year competitive show choir led by Bona Coogle and choreographed by Ashley Kimbrough. North Texas was Vivacé’s first competition of the year. The second runner-up of the competition was last year‘s grand champions, The Bell System. Led by Jo Ann Antinone and choreographed by Steph Hyatt, this was also Bell System's first competition of the year. Bell System will also be competing at Keller Lone Star along Pantheon.
The Dallas-Fort Worth area had another competition this weekend, the HEB Invitational hosted by L.D. Bell. This competition brought in groups from out-of-state, pairing with several in-state groups for a great inaugural competition. Jenks Trojanaires took home Grand Champion along with Best Vocals. The Trojanaires have had an outstanding season, but this was their first win of the season in four competitions.
In second place was Southwest Effect, and they took home the Best Visuals caption. Trojan Spirit, Jenks' womens group, took home the division win in the prep category along with Best Visuals. Southwest’s prep group, Sound Machine, took home third place in the prep category.
Second runner-up in finals was Voices of Central. This was VOC's last in-state competition of the year, as they will compete at Millard North Galaxy of the Stars on March 15th. Voltage, Central's girls group, took home second place in the prep category at HEB along with Best Vocals.
Moving on from the top three, Silver Elite finished their competition season with a fourth place, Jenks Airemen were fifth, and finally Coppell Vivacé finished their breakthrough season in sixth. Melissa Scarlet Soundwave made their grand debut at HEB, but did not end up placing.
Looking forward, the current competition in Texas is the Keller Central Lone Star Invitational. Lone Star is Texas' only three-day event, featuring intermediate schools on Thursday, middle schools on Friday, and high schools on Saturday. Last year’s winer, Broken Arrow, will not be competing this year, giving last year's first runner-up, Blue Lights, a chance to take grand champion. It won't be easy for them, as there are multiple out-of-state groups aiming for the gold. Hastings Uncaged from Nebraska will be making the trip down, as well as Joplin, Missouri's Touch of Class. Other frontrunners for this competition include Pantheon, who recently won Grand Champion at North Texas, as well as Bell System and Aerodynamix. Scarlet Soundwave, from Melissa High School, is making their second competition appearance this weekend.
The competition season for this region is officially halfway over. Who will take Grand Champion at the last three competitions? Will Blue Lights be undefeated in the state and claim the number one spot? Check back here for more updates as the season progresses!
