Feb. 1st Southern Show Choir Preview

By Tony Holeman, Southern contributor

Welcome back to another Southern Show Choir preview! This week has a lot to dissect as the South will be holding four competitions, three in Mississippi and one in Alabama, so be sure to follow along with the different storylines and breakdowns!

JACKSON ACADEMY SHOW CHOIR INVITATIONAL

Arguably the most top-heavy competition for the South this weekend, the 2025 Jackson Academy Show Choir Invitational (or JASI for short) has two early favorites: Grenada Visions and Tupelo Synergy. Grenada is coming off their best competitive season ever, while Tupelo is looking for their first-ever Grand Championship. With that being said, we have yet to see a few of these groups compete. This leaves a higher chance of a surprise group to knock off one of the aforementioned favorites, such as Madison Central or Jackson Prep. We do know Northwest has already started off the season with a Grand Championship, so they can’t be counted out either. Full predictions are as below:

Predictions (five finalists):

GC) Grenada “Visions” (BC/Show Design)

1RU) Tupelo “Synergy” (BV)

2RU) Northwest Rankin “The Ambassadors”

3RU) Madison Central “Reveille”

4RU) Jackson Prep “Reveillon”

1st in 4A) Grenada “Visions”

1st in 3A) Northwest Rankin “The Ambassadors”

Only Group in 2A) Clinton Christian Academy “Extreme”

1st in 1A) Pisgah “Innergy”

1st in Single Gender) Tupelo “Synergy”

SOUTH JONES INVITATIONAL

While this competition looks to be a surefire sweep for Brandon Brio at the top (and a very possible overall second placement for their womens group Bellas), the highlight of this competition lies in the 1A division, where both Oxford and West Marion look to start their competitive seasons against each other. This isn’t even mentioning small-division blue-blood Wayne County hiding in the mix as well. While it’s the only competitive division of the day at this event, it looks to be a good one. Final predictions are as follows:

Predictions (no finals):

GC) Brandon “Brio” (BV/BC/Show Design)

Only Group in 4A) Brandon “Brio”

Only Group in 3A) West Jones “Imagination”

Only Group in 2A) Northeast Jones “Gold Horizons”

1st in 1A) Oxford “Sound”

Only Group in Womens) Brandon “Bellas”

ALBERTVILLE DIAMOND CLASSIC

While JASI may be the most competitive competition this weekend at the top, this competition has a TON going on throughout all the divisions. Averaging five groups per division, Albertville looks to be a clean sweep for the season-debuting Homewood The Network. What will be interesting to watch will be how the other large mixed groups and all the middle mixed groups compete against one another. Hoover, Vestavia Hills, and Tift County all pose a major threat to make an upset and place above the other large mixed groups. Not to mention, we’ll get to see how a red-hot Tift County single-gender program (both their womens and mens groups) do against both Homewood’s and Enterprise’s. This event will be integral in how these groups will be looked at in future events. Final predictions are as follows:

Predictions (no finals):

GC) Homewood “The Network” (BV/BC/Show Design)

1st in Large Mixed) Homewood “The Network”

1st in Middle Mixed) Hoover “Paradigm”

1st in Small Mixed) Chelsea “Out Of The Blue”

1st in Single-Gender) Homewood “Nexus”

MISSISSIPPI SHOW CHOIR CONTEST

A fairly competitive event, Petal looks to start their season off strong as early favorites to sweep here. However, early-season competitions are no stranger to upsets, and Biloxi could possibly make an early statement here with a strong showing against Petal. There's also a solid single-gender matchup between Petal Innovations, Biloxi's new girls group, Sound Sirens, and Purvis Pizzazz, who is a womens group this year after competing in small mixed last year. This competition also features a small matchup in the 2A division (Sumrall versus Pearl River Central). Final predictions are as follows:

Predictions (no finals):

GC) Petal “Soundsations” (BV/BC/Show Design)

1st in 4A) Petal “Soundsations”

1st in 2A) Pearl River Central “Central Attraction”

1st in 1A) Pass Christian “Luminary”

1st in Womens) Petal “Innovations”

Come right back here after the weekend is over for a dissection of all the results, whether they be chalk or upsets. Good luck to all the groups!
