Favored for a Reason: A Southern Show Choir Recap (Feb. 10)

This last weekend’s competitions didn’t yield anything that was too shocking in terms of expectations, but nonetheless handed us a few important things to look at as we continue throughout this season. Let’s take a dive into the three events that were hosted in the southern circuit this last Saturday.

NORTHEAST JONES CLASSIC

(@bhsshowchoirs)

In tune with the other three competitions down south, the heavily favored group Brandon was not to be denied, coming out of finals with a full sweep. They came into this event looking for a much-needed bounce-back win after two second overall placements in a row. Outside of the upper tiers, we also saw the final asterisk removed from Oxford’s claim as top small division group in the south, as they beat Pisgah to take first place not only in the division here at this competition, but also unanimously without question across the south. It’s also worth noting that even though they were 1.5 points behind Madison Central, Oxford did outscore Reveille on two of three judges scoresheets, coming within a razor's edge of beating a superlarge mixed group for a finals spot. Final results are below:

GC) Brandon “Brio” (BV/BC/Show Design)

1RU) West Jones “Imagination”

2RU) Brandon “Bellas”

3RU) South Jones “Company”

4RU) Madison Central “Reveille”

1st in Single-Gender) Brandon “Bellas”

1st in Small Mixed) Oxford “Sound”

JASPER FOOTHILLS CLASSIC

(@hwd_showchoirs)

Like I said before, heavily favored groups held serve this last weekend, and Homewood was no exception here. They too came out of finals with a full sweep over their peers. It’s also worth noting that with this competition, Homewood has now won at every currently-held event in the state of Alabama. Vestavia Hills also made a mark of their own at this competition, placing 3rd overall in finals as a middle mixed group. Final results are below:

GC) Homewood “The Network” (BV/BC/Show Design)

1RU) Enterprise “Encores”

2RU) Vestavia Hills “Singers”

3RU) Homewood “Nexus”

4RU) Jackson Prep “Reveillon”

1st in Single-Gender) Homewood “Nexus”

1st in Middle Mixed) Vestavia Hills “Singers”

1st in Small Mixed) Rome "Grand Finale"

OPELIKA SOUTHERN SHOWCASE

(@ahschoralcompany)

As for our last favored group, Auburn swept at the 2024 Opelika Southern Showcase over other groups such as Biloxi and Tift County. Other than some sorting out in the middle mixed division (with Briarwood coming on top) and West Marion taking over small division, there wasn’t anything unexpected or shocking resulting from this event. As there were no finals, we will just display the top three large groups and the winners of all following divisions. Final results are below:

GC) Auburn “Varsity Singers” (BV/BC/Show Design)

1RU) Biloxi “Sound Surge”

2RU) Tift County) “8th Street Singing Company”

1st in Treble) Auburn “Elan”

1st in Bass) Tift County “Tiftosterone”

1st in Middle Mixed) Briarwood “Radica”

1st in Small Mixed) West Marion “New Era”

LOOKING FORWARD

After a relatively calm week in the southern show choir circuit, we start to ramp up the competitiveness once again this upcoming weekend. Between Clinton’s first showing this season against a surging Oak Mountain at the Homewood South Central Classic, the absolute slug-fest between large/superlarge groups at the inaugural Tupelo King City Classic, and another small division battle at the West Jones Invitational, this weekend will provide plenty to look forward to. With all that said, good luck to all the groups next week, and happy show choir season y’all!

Next Week’s Events:

Tupelo King City Classic (Tupelo, MS)

Homewood South Central Classic (Homewood, AL)

West Jones Show Choir Invitational (Laurel, MS)
