2nd: Fruita Monument "Mountain Melodies"

In the annual battle between the two 5A choirs that regularly attend this festival, Grand Junction Central came out on top. It wasn't particularly close, either, as Sound Sensations received a unanimous "I" rating from all three judges and Mountain Melodies received a unanimous "II" rating from all three judges.

With a runner-up finish, Hough secured its seventh straight top-three finish and also claimed awards for Best Female Soloist and Best Female Stage Presence. Showformance rounded out the high school captions, taking home the Best Male Stage Presence award. Despite entering two groups, South Granville could not crack the top three. In the middle school division, Encore Singers registered its third straight state championship and also took home Best Show Design, Best Male Soloist and Best Male Stage Presence. Seventy-First, a staple of states before the pandemic, did not enter in 2022 but came storming back to second, complete with a Best Female Stage Presence caption. Mt. Airy won the Best Female Soloist award, and while Western Harnett did not place, they did win a Director’s Award.

Well, well, well. For the only time this season, California’s Big Three had a meetup. And it lived up to all of the expectations and more. For the fourth time this season, Los Alamitos won a competition. The victory completes an undefeated season for them. However, it definitely was not a blowout victory. After going relatively untested for the first two competitions of its season, Burbank took the musicianship caption and registered a second-place finish. While Powerhouse came in third on the final standings, multiple sources have verified that Burroughs was in first place in raw points before time penalties were deducted. A similar fate befell them at Hart, when Sound FX took the win because of a Powerhouse time penalty. This was the first time that the Big Three all converged since the end of the pandemic.

Across all divisions, there was plenty of parity, as many more divisions split the two main captions than having one group sweep them. One program that really stood out as having a banner day was Valley Vista. They seem to have carried the torch for Arizona this year, with the top group, Vocal Thunder, taking the intermediate mixed win over groups from Los Al and Burroughs. Their mixed prep group, Ignition, split captions with division stalwart Eisenhower in novice mixed, and the womens group, Avalon, took home a split-caption division win in novice mixed over Los Al. Arizona as a whole had a nice contest, as Shadow Ridge swept the novice mixed II division as well. On the topic of winning, Men@Work capped off an undefeated season, winning all three competitions they entered this year.

The nationwide season wraps up next weekend, check back in next week for one final spring 2023 edition of Comps of the Week!
