Comps of the Week Recap: 4/12/25

Updated: Apr 14

By William Soquet, Editor-in-Chief

A group from Kansas shook out as the winner of the FAME finals, a North Carolina group pulled an upset for their first win, and an Oklahoma group stayed chalk to end the season.

FAME National Show Choir Finals

Mixed Results

GC: Blue Valley “Chamber Singers” (BV/BC)

1RU: Norris “Gold”

2RU: Northwest Rankin “The Ambassadors”

3RU: Grand Island Northwest “14 Karat Gold”

Chamber Singers ended the season on a high note, claiming their second straight win and third in five competitions this season. The group, within the last two seasons, has quickly become a force to be reckoned with on a national stage. This is all the more impressive when it’s taken into account that 2025 was merely the group’s fourth competitive season, as they entered the scene after the pandemic. Where the future takes Blue Valley is unknown, but it is safe to say that they have grown out of their infancy as a choir. Norris had not competed for over two months coming into this competition – February 8th, to be exact – but Gold still rounded out the season in excellent form. In addition, UNL grad Max Bower was recently announced as an addition to the vocal music staff at Norris. Northwest Rankin finished their late-season swing strong, taking home a podium placement and finishing a solid six-competition season. Grand Island Northwest was the bottom choir here, but with a fourth, they completed a straight of placing 1-2-3-4-5, all just once, throughout their season.

Final Results

GC: Broken Arrow “Tiger Rhythm” (BV/BC/BB)

1RU: Broken Arrow “Tiger Mystique”

2RU: El Dorado Springs “Sound Collage”

3RU: Edmond Santa Fe “Serenade”

It was the Broken Arrow show through and through on Saturday, with Tiger Rhythm and Tiger Mystique taking a runaway 1-2. Mystique pulled its weight well, swiping Best Ballad from Rhythm and also taking a soloist caption. Sound Collage made finals for the second time this season, a banner year for them, and also took captions for costumes and a soloist. Although Oklahoma results are hard to come by online, this is arguably the best result for an Edmond Santa Fe choir since the mixed group, Finale, won the Duncan festival in 2019. (Editor’s Note: If anyone has a better placement for the program since then, please send an email to homeroomshowchoir@gmail.com.) One part of the competition that was not the Broken Arrow show was the middle school competition on Friday night. Durant Appawse took home the win, and Bixby Spartan Singsations were second. The top Broken Arrow group was Oliver’s Tiger Tempo in third.

North Carolina State Show Choir Finals

High School Results

GC: Lake Norman “Showformance”

1RU: Voyager “Bull City Lights”

2RU: South Granville “Shades of Blue” (BC)

3RU: South Granville “Chord on Blues”

4RU: Triton “Showstoppers”

In a year where nobody besides Voyager competed during the regular season, Lake Norman came out of left field to take its first-ever state championship. Showformance had previously knocked on the door, placing as high as second and taking captions for Best Choreography, but 2025 is the breakthrough year for the Charlotte-area group. Voyager rounded out its three-competition slate by taking second, still a solid showing. South Granville wound up third for the second consecutive year, but this time they did take Best Choreography on the back of a Chantz Gould-choreographed set.

A few more competitions remain in the season – and when they happen, Comps of the Week will be here to cover them.
