Comps of the Week Recap: 3/2/24

The lineups promised big results… and the competitions delivered!

Avon Vocal Invitational

Mixed Finals

GC: Brownsburg “Spotlight Singers & Co.” (BV)

1RU: Plainfield “Belles et Beaux” (BC)

2RU: Fishers “Electrum”

3RU: Lawrence Central “Central Sound” (BB)

Womens Finals

GC: Fishers “Sound” (BV/BC)

1RU: Plainfield “Femmes Fatales”

2RU: Brownsburg “Starlight Voices”

3RU: Lawrence North “Bella Bravada”

In a matchup of the sixth, seventh, and eighth-ranked mixed choirs in Indiana (according to our panel), Brownsburg took home a massive win to solidify their standing as being right in the mix of Indiana’s A-tier choirs. Spotlight won its second consecutive AVI and now has six triumphs in the event since 2017. On the flip side, Sound crushed the scoresheet yet again to deliver a fifth straight win, dating back to ISSMA last year. Plainfield split the field with second-place finishes in each division, with Belles et Beaux coming up just a hair short of their third win of the season. While third is not where either Electrum or Starlight Voices probably wanted to be, it’s just a given that someone has to be there when the choirs are this close. A final interesting split comes at the bottom of both finals. Lawrence Central nipped Lawrence North for a mixed finals berth, while it was the other way around in womens.

Burbank Blast Results

Advanced Mixed I: 1st) John Burroughs “Powerhouse” (Music/Show), 2nd) Los Alamitos “Sound FX”

Advanced Mixed II: 1st) Jackson Prep “Reveillon” (Music), 2nd) Hart “Sound Vibrations” (Show), 3rd) Diamond Bar “Marquis”, 4th) Brea Olinda “Masquerade”

No time penalties. No split captions. Just a group that walked away from a competition with a top-division win in California with a musicianship trophy in one hand and a showmanship trophy in the other hand. While the point margins were undoubtedly close, the first battle of the 2024 war has gone to Burroughs. It’s worth noting that Powerhouse had a previous competition outing at Bonita Vista in mid-February, which may have helped them round into form just a touch earlier than Sound FX. Both choirs will now travel east of the Mississippi for a week before coming back home, likely with an end-of-season showdown at Oceanside awaiting. Jackson Prep is another standout from this competition. Reveillon had a tough season in their home circuit, and a win over traditional small advanced titans Hart, Diamond Bar and Brea Olinda is a nice feather in their cap. Down the card, Burroughs and Los Al won every single other division. Cypress, Oceanside and Granada Hills were the top three ‘independent’ groups in intermediate mixed, setting up a fun season in that division.

Lewis Central Clash of the Titans Final Results

GC: Lincoln East “Express” (BV/BC)

1RU: Omaha Westside “Amazing Technicolor Show Choir”

2RU: Millard West “West in the Groove”

3RU: Papillion-La Vista South “Titanium” (BB)

4RU: Papillion-La Vista South “Titan Radiance”

5RU: Millard South “South on Stage”

Nebraska executed a clean finals sweep on this Iowa competition, turning back competitors from the home state, South Dakota and Texas to make it happen. Any doubts, conspiracies or other questions about Lincoln East should be considered done and dusted after this weekend. Express exploded for four wins this season, by far their most successful season ever. They beat pretty much every major power player in Nebraska show choir this year save for Gretna, who they did not compete against at all. Westside takes wins over WIG and Titanium into a daunting matchup with Clinton in two weeks. Millard West also has one more task ahead of them this year, competing at Mitchell in two weeks. Titan Radiance won a tight womens division and made finals, finishing fifth overall at Lewis Central for the second consecutive season. Millard South notched another solid finals placement and extended its finals streak to 16 straight competitions.

Totino-Grace Show Choir Spectacular Final Results

GC: Gretna “Revolution” (BC)

1RU: Hastings “Riverside Company” (BV/BB)

2RU: Onalaska “Hilltoppers”

3RU: North St. Paul “Northern Lights”

4RU: Bemidji “Vocalmotive”

5RU: La Crosse Central “Grand Central Station”

Revolution completed its thoroughly revolutionary season this year. They are the first group in the country to hit five on the win counter for 2024, although it didn’t come without some adversity. Revolution made up a 10.5-point gap on Hastings in finals and secured the win with four first-place votes from the judges. Their ‘last dance’-themed show took one phenomenal final act, with Cameron Bothwell taking home his third soloist award of the year to add to his three last year and the two that his sister Autumn won in 2021. Hastings was in true late-season form as well, with Riverside Company taking two of the three major captions off Gretna. It was a marked improvement from Papio South in February, where Gretna swept Hastings. Further down the results, North St. Paul took home their first-ever head-to-head win over Bemidji. Vocalmotive entered finals in sixth and came out in fifth, a situation similar to the Onalaska Show Choir Classic earlier in the year when Bemidji won the event in a split-caption decision over La Crosse Central.

Glenwood The Event Final Results

GC: Mt. Zion “Swingsations” (BV/BC)

1RU: El Paso-Gridley “Modulations” (BB)

2RU: Waubonsie Valley “Sound Check”

3RU: Manteno “Magic”

4RU: Marquette “Center Stage”

5RU: Mt. Zion “Les Femmes”

It was a statement weekend for Mt. Zion. With the program only on its third competition of the season and at the beginning of a challenging three-week March run, Swings came out and landed in the win column for the first time this season. El-Paso Gridley has rightly been considered one of the hottest groups in Illinois, but this seems to be the time of season where Swingsations rounds into its true form. The top three will all pull up to Wheaton Warrenville South this weekend, where the four finals spots will be few and far between in a stacked mixed field. Manteno and Marquette both landed solidly in finals ahead of Peoria. Les Femmes emerged on top of a single-gender division that featured arguably four of Illinois’ top six groups in that division and took their second finals appearance of the season as well.

This next weekend is yet another tight one throughout the country. As the season gets closer to the end, the action keeps heating up!
