For those who are not located in the Pacific time zone, California splits their choirs by skill level (novice, intermediate and advanced) and then has the option to split those by group size if the divisions grow too large. The vocals and choreography caption awards are called musicianship and showmanship. The top matchup is usually Advanced Mixed 1.

Burbank enters this competition as the favorite, winning music, show and first place at Esperanza earlier this year. Diamond Bar has beaten Hart twice this year, but the captions have been split both times and a reversal is not out of the question here.

In Advanced Mixed 2, Brea Olinda drops down from Advanced 1 earlier in the season to square off against a field that has zero division wins combined. The best challenge will likely come from Helix, although Chaparral could make some noise as well.

In Intermediate Mixed, Oceanside comes in off a dominating small mixed win at Waltham two weeks ago. The rest of the field is a little bit more questionable, as neither Hart nor Los Altos has finished better than third in division and Monterey is making its all-time competition debut.

In Novice Mixed Large, Apple Valley is the only group with a previous division win in 2023, but the division is such a wild card that it could legitimately go to any group on the list.

In Novice Mixed Small, Saugus cleaned out the division at Hart a month ago, while Western Sierra is making its season debut.

In womens, the story is Impressions debuting for the season. They will be facing a Hartbreakers group that has gone undefeated in division so far this year.

With neither Los Alamitos Xtreme nor John Burroughs Men@Work competing, the mens division is anyone’s to take. All three groups entered have competed only once so far this season, and none have finished higher than third in a division with competition.

Luther Burbank Starlight is the only group that enters with an overall middle school win in 2023, but Dolores Huerta and Travis Ranch both have second-place finishes to their name.

Check back at the end of the weekend for a look at how it all went down on stage!
